I think it’s really important to check up on charities. Too often I see people just forking over cash to charity with the idea that it’s “doing good”, but they don’t stop to think that charities vary hugely in the amount of administrative overhead they have, and even if you look past overhead or if you’re comparing charities with similar overhead, some organizations get a lot more mileage out of their money.

My general opinion is that it’s better to support small, local charities with which you are familiar and who you trust to use your money wisely, whether it’s a non-profit, a school, religious group, or anything. Large, national charities can do a lot of good, but many of them are rather bureaucratic and they have so many layers that it’s hard to know what they’re doing.

But I do like the Wikimedia foundation; they provide such a useful service through Wikipedia and all their other sites, and they make do with an extremely small number of paid employees; I think they are always a good choice of an organization to give to.

Hi Karen,

I am not sure about the service with Verizon. I have found T-mobile and USCellular far superior to AT&T. I cringe whenever I have to put a call into AT&T. Their service is spread out all over the globe in a chaotic mess and there is zero coordination. Recently I had to make about a dozen calls to finally fix a mess that they created with a DSL line.

Hi, Richard!! Here I am in Sarasota reading all this about AT&T. Are you suggesting a change of service?? I might be able to go on Verizon for my mobile telephone service. That causes some problems with cell phone choice. But do you think the service is so far superior that it would be worth it???

Meanwhile, enjoy the snow and think of me freezing down here with no heat on this side of the house and overheating on the other side. The sun shines. The birds sing. Everything is green, and yet it is cold. Only not a cold as Chicago or Minneapolis or Ontario!!!!!
